When most people think of Siddha medicine, they immediately think of a decoction, legium, or infusion made from the leaves, fruits, roots, or similar plant materials of some tree. But these are not the only substances used in Siddha medicine. There are many many more. The ancient Siddhas have researched so many substances.
The raw materials used in Siddha medicine can be classified as Plant Materials, Animal Materials, and Minerals. Everyone knows about Plant Materials. Milk, Ghee, Korosanai, Cow Horn, Sheep Horn etc are the examples of Animal Materials. Of these, except Milk and Ghee, none are used much at present.
The third group of materials that is Mineral can be further divided into three categories: Poisionous Minerals, Secondary Minerals, and Flavorings. The Ancient Siddha texts mention many Poisionous Minerals like Veeram, Thutham, Gowri Pashanam, Vellai Pashanam and Secondary Minerals like Magnet, Kalnaar, Thurisu, Red Soil and Flavorings like Soodan, Pooneer, Valayaluppu, Kadal Nurai.
All of these Minerals were created by the alchemist nature, just as coal and gasoline were formed underground. Minerals are prepared in two methods: those that are naturally mined from such mines or those that are artificially produced in Chemical Laboratories.
The Minerals thus obtained are cleaned from impurities such as Sand, Dust, and other Metal elements, and then subjected to formal maturation through methods such as soaking in Herbal Extracts, Refining in Fire, and Chemical Treatment. Herbal medicines are then made from those purified Minerals.
After knowing the potency and nature of the drugs along with the changes they cause on the human body, Our Siddhas developed methods for preparing Simple and Complex Medicines. They also brought to the world, the methods for preparing the most advanced medicines, such as Kaya Kalpam.
